I am back to updating AllAboutDogCare.com and it's sister site SpoilYourDog.com.

I've updated the blog over there with an update on a new dog ramp for Wanda. Based on that experience I will probably be writing an article called "How to Get Your Dog To Use a Dog Ramp" as it's a little longer process than I thought it would be with Wanda. :)

Grief Over Loss of Dog

It's been a long time since I've posted. I am sad to write that Berry died last fall, and I have been unable to even face posting on the dog care blog.

I finally am feeling like writing again and am happy to report that Wanda is doing well aside from her canine arthritis.

Hopefully more posts will be coming soon.

Summer Dog Grooming Tips

Dog grooming in the summer does not necessarily mean getting the “buzz-cut.” Dog owners may think that they are providing their dogs relief, but may actually may be increasing their dog’s discomfort.

For some dogs their coat provides insulation and protection against ultraviolet rays. Dogs don’t sweat like us. Dogs pant and sweat through their paws. Plus the sun is hard on dogs’ skin especially if they have a long coat. Although dogs do not tan, they do burn.

So what should dog owners do? According to Erica Richter, owner of Salon Poochini in Bal Harbor, FL the best thing you can do for your dog’s skin and coat is to keep your dog well-groomed. A healthy coat, no matter what the length, is always better than a shorter one that is tangled and matted. Tangles and mats can actually lead to dry skin and hot spots.

Even well-groomed dogs can face other summer skin irritants. Fleas and ticks are always unwelcome summer guests. So it’s important to have a good reliable flea/tick control product.

And finally consider switching to a good dog shampoo that has a built in conditioner. Dogs tend to get more baths in the summer as they are outdoors more and getting dirtier. Frequent shampooing can actually dry your dog’s skin adding to his discomfort. So its good to supplement bathing with deodorizing spritzes and waterless foam shampoos to keep your dog looking and smelling great.

Is Your Dog The Right Weight

Here's how to find out is your dog is overweight:

Rib check: Plasce both thumbs on your dog's backbone and run your fingers along his rib cage. If you can't easily fell his ribs with slight pressure, your dog is probably overweight.

Profile Check: Take a look at your dog from the side. If your dog is at the right weight, you should see a clearly defined abdomen.

Overhead Check: Stand directly over your dog while he's standing up. You should see a clearly defined hour-glass shape. If not, your dog is too heavy.

Even a little weight gain can be bad for your dog. Remember an extra five pounds on a dog that should weigh 17 pounds is like a person who should weigh 170 pounds gaining 50 pounds.

6 Tips To Get Your Dog Ready For Spring

I know most of us associate spring with spring cleaning - YUCK. I have a better solution - get you and your dog ready for spring and summer. You need to do it anyway, and it’s a lot more fun than cleaning.

1. Time to start training your dog. Lot’s of us tend to put off dog training in the winter. Spring is a great time to start or get back into the training groove.

2. Always use a leash. Spring brings lots of new smells that our dogs just have to check out. Even the best trained dogs really want to chase those squirrels, rabbits, and roaming cats. Unfortunately dogs just chase; they don’t look both ways before crossing the street and can be hit by a car.

3. Update your dog’s ID tag. Make sure your dog's ID is readable and has the right phone # and address.

4. Time to shed those extra pounds. Your’s and your dog’s. Take your dog on an extra walk or start jogging together. Exercise not only gets both of you in shape but increases the bond with your dog.

5. Spring time time to think about flea and tick prevention. Unfortunately it also means the return of mosquitos. Make sure to get your dog on a flea preventative and make sure to get your dog back on heartworm medication.

6. Buy or put together a dog first aid kit. Spring is the time of year when bees, wasps, and other creatures start buzzing around. And if your dogs are like mine, dogs seem to think that wasps are things to be snapped or swatted at - sometimes getting stung.

Dogs and Their Owners Benefit from Exercising Together

Dog owners and their dogs are more likely to stay on a weight loss program if they exercise together according to a study conducted by Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Hill’s Pet Nutrition.

The study consisted of dogs and their owners, dogs only, and people only. During the 12 month study people lost an average of 11 pounds while dogs lost an average of 12 pounds. Groups together lost approximately the same amount of weight but those in the people-dog group were more likely to maintain the program after the study was completed.

Two thirds of the increase in physical activity in the dog-dog owner group came from dog-related activities.

The study showed that dogs provide the companionship, social support, and motivation to stick with the program until the pounds come off.

How To Brush Your Dog's Teeth

Brushing a Dog’s Teeth

According to the American Veterinary Association, periodontal disease starts with plaque buildup, that eventually hardens into tartar. Eventually your dog’s gums become inflamed and painful and your dog gets bad breath. The pain can make your dog depressed and in extreme cases can make your dog refuse to eat.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. The best thing you can do for your dog’s dental health is brush your dog’s teeth daily. An actual toothbrush is recommended, however is your dog is uncooperative, you can substitute dog toothpaste on a piece of gauze around your finger.

Bad Breath in dogs is the biggest indicator that your dog needs a dog dental checkup. Dogs with inflamed gums probably need a teeth cleaning by a veterinarian. However it is possible that a dog whose teeth are brushed every day may never need a professional cleaning.

The best way for you to get a dog used to brushing is to start as early as possible. But with any dog start slowly, brush every day, and of course reward your dog every time he gets his teeth brushed.
