Advantages of Dog Doors
Dog doors can be a working person's lifesaver. No more running home for lunch, cursing at the slow traffic, or hoping that your dog was able to "hold-it" all day.
They can be installed in a wall, a door, sliding glass doors, and even metal panels. Just be sure that your yard is totally fenced and that there are no holes inviting your dog out of the yard.
Advantages of a Dog Door
- You don't have to play doorman to your dog during your favorite shows.
- No more urgent wake-ups in the middle of the night.
- You don't have to worry or feel guilty if you are running late getting home.
- No more accidents to clean up!
How to Measure for a Dog Door
- The width of the opening should be a little wider then the widest part of your pet.
- To figure out the height of the opening measure from the top of the shoulders to the chest just behind the front legs.
If you are going to use a dog door, make sure the rooms available to your dog can stand all the tracked in dirt and other things dogs may bring in.
The perfect example is Sarah. Sarah's previous foster parent had this to say about our energetic Shepherd,
"Left to her own devices, Sarah will find something to do. The other day she decided to bring the fireplace wood stacked in the backyard into the house nearer to the fireplace. One by one she would bring a log through the doggie door and drop it in the living room. I hope she's not predicting a cold winter!"
So you definitely want to put the dog door in a room such as a mud room, kitchen, or den. Also you will want to place a good quality mat inside the doggie door.
